RECOVERY COACHING
Does This Sound Familiar?
Try as you might, are you unable to quit drinking or drugging?
Or have you managed to quit, but feel stuck in a rut and not sure which way to turn? Do you feel like something is holding you back, despite your best efforts to move forward?
You're not alone. Having been an addict for more than 20 years, I understand how you feel. While getting the "monkey off your back" is a huge step in the right direction, it's only half the battle. The other half is learning how to move forward with the rest of your life. As we emerge from the mental fog of addiction, it's like stepping back into the world after living in a black hole for years. It takes time to adjust to normal life and we need someone to guide us. Whether you've recently become clean and sober or you're currently struggling with addiction alone, I can help you.
How Does An Addiction Recovery Coach Help?
• We listen. Listening might not sound like much, but it's the most important thing we do. We listen without judgment to the things you say and the things you don't. We listen to your passions, your interests, and the challenges you face. We listen to YOU.
• We work together with you, as a team, to identify and explore your greatest strengths, skills and dreams.
• We help you remove obstacles that stand between you and your goals.
• We work with you to form a plan of action designed to help you achieve your goals, and we do it in a way that works best for you.
• We don't focus on your past - unlike counseling, which spends months or years rehashing the past, addiction recovery coaching is all about today, tomorrow, and building the future you deserve.
• We help you to become clear on the things you want in life and form a strategy to help you get there.
• We offer accountability to our clients. We help you plot your own course, guide you through it, and empower you to live a happy and fulfilling life.
• We help you to rebuild relationships with your family, friends and loved ones.
What If I Already Have A Sponsor?
No problem at all. Addiction recovery coaching, sponsors, therapists and other resources complement one another. Heres a breakdown that compares the three:
Addiction Recovery Coach

If you're like most people that have been caught up in addiction, you've had enough of being stuck in a rut and living in the past. You want to get your life back on track now, without looking back, and find a way to truly enjoy the rest of your life. As your professional recovery coach, my training and personal experience with addiction will help you cut through the red tape and go straight to the heart of overcoming addiction. I am committed to helping you or a loved one make the transition to a fully recovered life, and not simply exist as a forever-recovering addict.
Must I Attend A.A. Meetings?
Absolutely not. While many people find A.A. helpful, it's not for everyone. As your Recovery Coach, I can provide you with a list of available resources, including non-12 Step alternatives, if you choose. If support groups are not for you, there are other options, as well.
What Do I Need To Bring?
You need a sincere desire to change your life and break the chains of addiction for good. If you're not ready, then it's not for you. But, if you are truly prepared to change, there is no easier or faster way to do it than with us.

About Dan
Seventeen years after recovering from a 20-year addiction to alcohol and drugs, Dan sat down and wrote a book to tell his story. Partly a memoir and partly a guide to help others struggling with addiction, 3 Steps To Recovery is a brutally honest, no-holds-barred account of addiction as viewed from the addict’s eyes.
Writing is extremely therapeutic. Recording our thoughts, feelings, and personal experiences helps us to gain insight about ourselves. While looking back on his own battle with addiction, Dan realized helping other struggling addicts was something he both wanted and needed to do with his life. His own path to recovery had been anything but easy. He was chosen most likely to fail rehab treatment by his counselors because he refused to view addiction as an "incurable disease". In his opinion, the incurable disease belief holds people back and instills a helpless victim mentality. He realized that empowering and encouraging people to move forward, rather than looking back, is a more effective method of helping people to beat addiction for good.
Dan began researching other recovery methods and was instantly attracted to addiction recovery coaching. Today he shares his knowledge and personal addiction experience with others, which is how Breaking Free Recovery Coaching came about. While many addiction recovery coaches work only with people that have already stopped drinking or using, Dan welcomes those currently struggling with addiction, as well. As long as you truly want to change your life, he can help you.
You deserve to work with someone that understands your situation and has walked in your shoes. As a hardcore alcoholic for more than two decades, Dan complicated nearly everything in life. It's what we tend to do as addicts. During recovery, he learned the opposite. Simplifying is the key. Not only in addiction recovery, but also in living a happy, fulfilling, and productive life. As your addiction recovery coach, he won't waste time rehashing the past. Instead, the focus is on where you are now and where you want to be tomorrow.
You can expect a simple, well-structured, down-to-earth approach to overcoming addiction with Dan. Together, you and he will work as a team to achieve your goals in the simplest, yet most effective possible way.
Author - 3 Steps To Recovery

Certified Addiction Recovery Coach - completed training through Harold Jonas, a counseling professional and pioneer in the field of recovery coaching, and later graduated from the World Coaching Institute, which offers extremely comprehensive training in addiction recovery coaching.
What is recovery coaching?
Addiction Recovery Coaching services fall somewhere between those of an addiction counselor and an A.A. sponsor, although it is neither. Unlike an addiction counselor/therapist, a Recovery Coach's duties don't involve mental evaluations or psychological counseling, while an A.A. sponsors primary responsibility is to teach A.A.'s 12 Steps and little more. Simply put, Recovery Coaching focuses not on an addict's weaknesses, but on his or her strengths. By focusing on a client's assets and strengths, the Recovery Coach helps people to identify and remove obstacles blocking the path to recovery and assists them in getting their lives back on track. Rather than dictating what the addict must do, a Recovery Coach helps the client identify his or her own strengths, interests and goals. The Recovery Coach then works with the client to create a personalized step-by-step plan to achieve their goals. This approach empowers you to take control of your life and your recovery.
Why did you become an Addiction Recovery Coach?
Addiction is something that has affected my life in many ways. As a hardcore alcoholic and drug user for 20 years, I learned about addiction the hard way. In the process, I lost a sister and two best friends to alcohol and/or drugs. I was more fortunate to make a full recovery and realized that helping others overcome addiction is my life mission.
What are your qualifications?
In addition to personal experience with addiction and recovery, I've completed training through Harold Jonas, a counseling professional and pioneer in the recovery coaching field, and also a graduate of the World Coaching Institute, which offers some of the most comprehensive recovery coaching curriculum available anywhere. Additionally, I wrote and published a self-help addiction recovery book called 3 Steps To Recovery, which is available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other retailers. What is your approach to addiction recovery coaching?
One of my favorite words is SIMPLE. Addiction recovery is like most things in life - it can be as simple or as complicated as we make it. I've never met an addict that doesn't tend to complicate things. It's one of the reasons we become addicts. But recovery doesn't have to be that way. You'll find my approach to be friendly, down-to-earth, and tailored to your individual needs. As your guide to beating addiction, we're in it together. I walk side-by-side with you every step of the way. My approach is open-minded, nonjudgmental, and simple - the focus is on pointing you in the right direction, not pointing out your flaws and imperfections.
How Do Sessions Work?
We start with a free consultation, which runs about half an hour. The free consultation is a way for us to get to know one another and to be sure we make a good fit. If we decide to work together, we'll meet for 40 minutes, one day per week. Most sessions are held over the phone, but can also be done using video chat or instant messenger, depending on your personal preference. Unlimited e-mail communication is included between sessions. The beauty of electronic sessions is that they can be done from the comfort of your home, office, or even on the go. All that's required is a quiet spot and a telephone or internet connection, which can be wired or wireless. Thanks to the latest advances in technology, meeting for sessions has never been easier.
What types of addictions do you work with?
I can help you with any type of addiction - alcohol, drugs, gambling, shopping, and food addiction, to name a few.
I recently completed rehab. How can you help me?
An estimated 60-80% of patients will relapse after treatment. Most people relapse because they have little or no aftercare support when returning to the real world. The stress of strained relationships, employment, or finances has caused many people in early recovery to fail. You've invested too much time and hard work in your recovery to lose it all again. An increasing number of rehab clinics now offer Recovery Coaching as an aftercare option for people leaving treatment. As your recovery coach, my job is to help you get on the right track in and help you stay there.
I'm currently struggling with addiction alone. Can you help me?
Absolutely. All you need is a sincere desire to stop and I can help you, whether it's finding medical assistance, rehab, or other assistance. If you've been through a treatment program, but are still struggling, we will design a plan tailored to fit your needs.
Is my privacy guaranteed?

Three Steps To
RECOVERY
Most people probably wouldn't laugh while dangling upside down from the side of a 430-foot cliff. Then again, most people wouldn't be stumbling around a mountaintop wasted out of their minds on a pitch-black night. I was a little annoyed after noticing the torn front pocket of my new jeans the next morning, but my indignation quickly faded when my friends explained what happened. My pocket had become hooked on a tree limb as I plunged towards certain death. My friends went on to explain how they had formed a human chain and pulled me to safety. I thought they were joking until they drove me back up the mountain to see for myself. I havent stepped within twenty feet of a cliff edge since that night. Thank you, my friends. Thank you, Levi-Strauss. And thank you, Guardian Angel.
I suppose most people might have learned something after experiencing a brush with death. It should have served as a wake up call that my huge appetite for drugs and alcohol was out of control. But it didnt, not even after several more near-misses. By age 21, I'd managed to destroy four cars and my driver's license was revoked indefinitely. The last part of that sentence had something to do with smashing Dad's Ford Fairlane into a parked car while under the influence of barbiturates and alcohol. Most people would have learned something, but I wasn't like most people. I was young, angry, and an addict in the making. In fact, twenty more years would pass before I finally got the memo.
This book is about my life story. I didn't want to write a book about myself, but couldn't think of another way to fill the pages of a book about beating addiction without including the events leading up to my own struggle with alcohol and drugs. Nor would I be able to share with you the life-changing experience that cured a twenty-year addiction. That's right, cured. I'm not a recovering alcoholic. Most addiction professionals will tell you the opposite. They will swear up and down that no addict or alcoholic can ever be cured and will forever remain in a state of recovery. They will have you believe that every addict is always just one drink or pill away from total relapse and ruination. Addicts are simply far too fragile and helpless to ever hope to defeat our addiction, they assure us. Our only hope is through rehab, group therapy, and attending 12 Step meetings for the rest of our lives. While this approach might be helpful for some people - and Im not saying it isn't - there is a simpler way to kick the habit, based on 3 Steps of A.A.'s 12 Step program, and that's what this book is about.
But the 3 Steps approach to beating addiction doesn't apply only to alcoholics or drug addicts. The same three steps can be used to overcome any type of addiction, including food, sex, money, internet addiction and more.
Stress is the number one cause of relapse for most addicts. Nothing triggers the urge to swill booze or score drugs like a fight with your spouse, being laid off from work, or any number of stressful situations that come along in daily life. Although we can't avoid stress, we can learn to control the way we react to it. The solution is two-fold - simplifying and prioritizing. In the following pages, you will learn how to do just that, using 3 simple steps. Of course, I learned those 3 steps the hard way. My father always said I'd learn the hard way and he was right. I'm sharing some hard earned lessons with my fellow addicts so they won't have to follow my path. After spending more than half my life complicating nearly everything, and drinking myself into oblivion as a result, I learned to appreciate the simple life. Simple is good.
I hate long, boring book introductions and prefer to avoid using big words when a short and simple one will do just as well. Some writers seem to love both. I suspect some feel its a way to impress others with their superior intellect, or maybe they think it's what you're expected to do as an author. You won't find much of either in this book. What you will find is a true account of the life of a former addict, how he became one, his struggled through it, and how he was cured, written in plain English. And, oh yeah - I promise it's not dull and boring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth considering for those who are facing losing everything in their own lives, October 5, 2011
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)
This review is from: 3 Steps To Recovery (Paperback)
When you run out of options, it's either shape up or watch as life ships out without you. "3 Steps to Recovery : One Man's Triumph Over Alcohol And Drugs" is a blend of inspiration and memoir from Dan Farish, as he advises readers to put their head together and try to cope with their own addictions. Stating that his own ego was in the way, he grants practical advice and his own model for overcoming a disease, when everything else had failed him. "3 Steps to Recovery" is worth considering for those who are facing losing everything in their own lives and are looking to find a new option.
5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, heartfelt, painfully honest..., September 26, 2011
By C. Cogburn (Austin, TX United States) -
Dan is an online friend of mine, which is how I came to read this book, besides my own issues with substance abuse. It is an honest account of his struggles with addiction, and it's not always pleasant to read. But it is a gripping story, with a happy ending...
Definitely recommended for anyone wanting to learn more about addiction. I expect it'll become required reading for counselors and therapists: it's a brutally honest look at the subject.
5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Story, September 5, 2011
By Sandra Heptinstall -
This book is sad, but also powerful. It is the story of Dan Farish, a man who came from a family which proves truth is stranger than fiction. Within all of us, we hold secrets. Dan has taken out all the skeletons of his past so that we will see what was, and what can be.
Dan was raised in a terrible dysfunctional family. Physical abuse was almost daily. There was no one who would help him or his two sisters. Even relatives would not step in. His father was a big and intimidating man.
The memories of growing up in his family would last him his whole life. There was no getting away from them except in a bottle of alcohol. He started drinking as a teen and it continued for twenty years. He had to hit bottom before he could begin the healing powers of overcoming his addiction.
After going into an addiction rehab hospital that was based on the twelve step program of Alcoholics Anonymous, which has helped thousands of people, Dan will be the first to tell you that the program is good, but there are some who do not fit the pattern. Dan was one of them.
The author took three of the steps and with the help of God overcame his addiction. He prayed hour after hour and day after day for help. Then one night his prayers were answered. I won't tell you about what happened. I will just say that a miracle did happen. Whether it is you or someone you know that has any type of addiction you need to buy this book.
I have read a lot of books about addiction and I believe that this book will help anyone who reads it.
Excellent Book
5.0 out of 5 stars Truly a self-help guide to recovery., August 27, 2011
I would like to preface my comments with the fact that my foundation in my own personal journey towards a life of sobriety relies on one of those 12 step programs. I am and will forever be grateful to the fellowship for the lessons and life plan it has taught me and allowed me to share with others. I am also of the belief however, though this is a private and personal journey as individuals it should be shared with those of like kind with acceptance of each individuals personal truth of what works and doesn't work for them. I embrace the belief of open mindedness when it comes to sharing our stories and paths in recovery. By sharing what works for us as individuals just may work for one of us still struggling.
Dan's book "3 Steps To Recovery" gives another option to those seeking a solution with their addiction. It takes one to know one I always say. Dan's one of us. Who to know better the torment we go through with our affliction, addiction, disease or whatever you so choose to call it then another who has found a way that works? We all have a story. Dan shares his story with us in a way we can all relate to the similarities that take us to that dark place where we lose soul.
As you read through the story and watch the awakening transformation of recovery in progress you are witness to the possibilities and success the "3 Step" approach can do for you. The key ingredients to this method of recovery are solid, understandable and easy to achieve if you have the willingness to embrace in all it's wonder the path to sobriety. As Dan, myself and many others have found the biggest obstacle is fear of how to live sober. It is possible. "3 Steps To Recovery" is a wonderful alternative for those who balk at the idea of walking in the rooms or other programs of recovery. It will work if you work it honestly. Truly a self-help guide to recovery.
5.0 out of 5 stars Free To Choose, July 11, 2011
By Paul Tranter -
This review is from: 3 Steps To Recovery (Kindle Edition)
"My life is so deeply scarred. Not held captive by illicit drugs, not a slave to alcohol or so-called respectable, socially sanctioned prescription potions. But I am imprisoned nevertheless by an addiction no less sinister. Not my physical being, as such deprivation would be a pleasure to bear by comparison. Rather, it is my very essence, my soul, my spirit that is denied freedom, held by an invisible dungeon void of stones, bricks, mortar and steel bars. My gaoler is so omnipotent; there is no need for physical barriers. Why erect such challenging, visibly ominous structures, when seemingly inescapable despair can be crafted within the simple anonymity of one's psychological being? " (My own words)
What then, you may ask, are the hell you talking about? What has this to do with Dan Farish's book about victory over drugs and alcohol? I humbly say "everything and even more." The message in this book is so universal that it may have been unintended by the author. But somehow I doubt it. No I don't doubt, I know!
The opening paragraph above reflects the life of this reviewer in times now past, at least in large part because my joyful journey is infinite. Just as this book is not a one-size-fits-all fix it for every addict, the lessons laid on my heart from this wonderful work will not be appreciated by all reading this review. But that's just the point. The precious tapestry woven by this no-nonsense, easy-to-read life experience is relevant to life in so many varied ways as there are threads in the glorious pattern.
More than a critical catalyst for victory over addiction, this book is about a spiritual awakening. For some, it is about simply accepting that "God is" without compartmentalising Him/Her/It/Whomever/Whatever within yet another prison, the confines of a religious construct created by human beings trying to curry favour with The God of that religion's God doctrine and dogma. For others, like me, it is about; love and joyful freedom; opening one's heart and mind to the truth that a spiritual path is a very personal journey; accepting that different spiritual paths are rightfully chosen by different people; ceasing to judge and affording unconditional love to people who travel a different spiritual path from your own and boldly grasping the fortitude to shed the life destructing religious fear that has prevented the acknowledgement of all of the above. My shackles, my inability and my refusal to acknowledge these principles were my prison, instilled from birth, cast in a cauldron of carrots and fear, prescribing an eternity in heavenly bliss or in a never ending hell-fire and damned be all those heathens who were born into or chose to believe differently from the so-called straight and narrow of "our" God ordained fundamentalist religion.
Critical point! Even though I was a product of my childhood, as an independent adult I consciously chose to bolster my very personal prison walls and fear and loathing because they underpinned my comfort zone and protected me from what would have otherwise been soul destroying shame. Sound familiar to the mindset of an addict?
Read this book with an open heart and mind and you may be amazed by the results. Faithfully applying the principles, I am sure can open a door to freedom from addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. For those still unsure, unsatisfied or doubting their spirituality, it may well lead to the indescribable joy of true spiritual freedom and unconditional love for every entity we encounter.
Dan Farish's ability to apply the K.I.S.S. principle (keep it simple stupid) makes this book an easy read without sacrificing one iota of profundity. It is yet another of the many blessed confirmations of my journey since I gained the guts to take that first step. Put simply, it is a delight to read. I could not put it down. My own daughter (not an addict) sat at my computer and read non-stop. My son has begun the same journey. Dan is truly a free spirit with a message of true freedom. I eagerly await his next installment.
